  • What to wear for a BBQ

0 comments / Posted by April Marin

Aren’t outdoor parties one of the best part of ending spring and welcoming summer? ‘Tis the season for sumptuous and fun grilling and you might have received a lot of invites from friends, colleagues and relatives, so it’s best to be ready with your stylish yet comfortable outfit.

Make sure to consider your comfort when choosing your outfit as it will help you enjoy the event more. Your footwear should be stylish as well, however, the location will determine what the appropriate footwear will be.

Here are some tips on what to wear for different types of BBQ party:

    Business BBQ

If your office colleagues are setting up an annual cookout, it’s best to select office-friendly hues such as blue, black and whites. The simpler, the better. Pull off a plain top and a white pair of pants and finish it off with a fab necklace, and you’re ready to party! We love this West Hampton Sweater Poncho in Black – it is a casual sweater but it looks stylish when worn with white pants and vintage beads.

    House BBQ

Go for clothes which are made of cotton especially if the day is hot, to help your skin breathe while enjoying the BBQ party. Colorful sundresses are the best bet to House BBQs as they look cool and comfortable, especially when paired with sandals or sneakers. Keep in mind that it is a BBQ party so you might be sitting on low chairs, which will make your skirt go up – make sure your legs are covered in nice length and you’re good to go.

    Beach BBQ

This has got to be everyone’s favorite, as it involves the beach! You have a lot of choices when it comes to what to wear to a Beach BBQ party, it depends on the activities you will be prepared to do when out and about in the midday sun. Maxi dresses are great if you want to go swimming because you can easily wear your swimsuit underneath them. If there will be no swimming involved, you can go for a Denim pair of shorts, a white tank top worn with April Marin’s Montauk Tassel Scarf – this gives you the best beach-chic vibe especially if you go for the aqua one!

  • Memorial Day Planning

Being in New York City on Memorial Day gives you the easiest and cheapest ways of spending the unofficial kick-off to summer. NYC has something to give from skyline views, parks, art museums and memorials, so we’ll give you some of the free activities you can do on the three-day weekend.

    Fleet Week at the Intrepid

Nothing beats spending Memorial Day than to indulge in the real meaning of the celebration. What happens in a Fleet Week in NYC? An active military ship (or two) recently deployed in overseas operations docks for one week. Once the ships dock, the crews visit the city. Sometimes, the public can take a guided tour of the ships. This is a free annual event that caters to honor US Military service men and women, with loads of presentations and activities.

Lower East Side Festival of the Arts

What can go better than free theater music, dance, film and art for the three-day weekend? The Theater for the New City gives you the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts, which pays tribute to the artists of the Lower East Side and East Village with live performances, poetry reading, cabaret and others. In a generation full of Social Media and Smart Phones, this is one of the best ways to reconnect to art, through watching live performance on a non-working day, enjoying every minute of it.

    Enjoy Central Park

Central Park is one of the best parks to spend Memorial Day in, with its 500 acres of grass, lakes and ponds, this will give you a breath of fresh air after a week of working too hard in the office. Kids will enjoy being able to fly kites, enjoying a picnic or just simply sight-seeing everyone who’s having fun under the sun. After spending the afternoon in Central Park, be sure to walk in NYC streets on the lookout for the best New York hotdog or pizza. Walking through NYC streets during Memorial weekend immerses you into NYC’s diverse culture and cuisine.

    Biking

It is a three-day weekend, so your kids might want to utilize this as a bonding time. The best way to scan through the neighborhood is through biking together, as it is convenient and nature-friendly. If you do not have bicycles at home, there are a lot of NY Bike Rentals in Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge and Harlem that you can contact for an experience your kids will surely love.

While there are many options to consider on Memorial Day planning, the most important thing is to remember what the day is really for, and to make sure that we pay homage to the people who served for our country.

  • How to have a Garden Party

0 comments / Posted by April Marin

Who wouldn’t want to have outdoor entertainment on warm days and cool evenings? Spring is the best season to have a garden party, may it be for Mothers’ Day, a graduation celebration, or just a casual get together. It’s time to utilize your backyards for a gathering you won’t forget.

    Who’s Invited?

This is probably the most important information you want to gather as it will determine how much food you will be serving. List down the number of people you’d want to come over for the said date and send out invitations (don’t forget to confirm the exact number before the exact event to ensure everything is in proper order).

    Spring Theme

Make sure that you theme will favor both males and females, kids and adults. You want everyone to have fun so it’s better to not favor just one age group, or one gender. We highly recommend selecting pastel to coastal colors to complement your lawn’s and garden’s sunny feel. Best color pair? Turquoise, pink and yellow. If your party will be held late afternoon, make sure to put up pretty string lights which aren’t just lighting, but a very instagrammable subject which will make your guest can’t help but to take a snapshot. Gather the best party songs which are not too loud for you to be able to still talk to each other, but not too soft that your guests will request for them to take over the jock.

    Food Selection

This might be the most challenging part of the party, so make sure it is on point! Since it is not a formal party, your guests are most likely walking or moving around the area, so it is best to have food servings that can be taken wherever they sit, even if they transfer seats. Your best bet are fresh fruits either put on a stick or small cups. Give the kids some love by including marshmallows, chocolate fountain with different dips and biscuits. Do not forget the quesadillas, mini pizzas, cupcakes, fries and barbecues which are crowd favorites.

You might start the party while the sun is out, so having drinks is extremely important. Stuck up on different flavored juices and bottled water for the kids. If you want a little booze, it is better to prepare a signature cocktail for the entire party so you can control the alcohol content that your guests will probably have.

    Your Instagram Corner

Okay, most of us always want to rave about what we did for spring – so what better way to do it than to boast it on Instagram? The best (and cheapest) way of giving your guests a remembrance is by putting up a photo wall where they can stand and take pictures showing off their OOTDs, however long they want. Since it is a Spring Garden Party, best photo wall design would be a DIY boxwood backdrop – it is a live greenery and flower wall which would be perfect for every photo you will take.
